What does the free provincial well water test NOT test for?
The free Public Health Ontario test checks strictly for biological bacteria. It gives you zero information regarding aesthetic minerals, mineral hardness, iron staining, sulfur gas, lead, arsenic, nitrates, or chemical runoff.
To measure hardness (grains per gallon), iron (ppm), sulfur (H₂S gas), and total dissolved solids (TDS), you need an in-home chemistry screening or an accredited private lab analysis.
Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?
A rotten egg odor indicates dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S). In Southern Ontario, this is produced naturally by harmless sulfur-reducing bacteria living deep within Silurian dolomite and Salina shale bedrock formations under subterranean pressure.
